Traghetto Crossing from Santa Sofia (3 Years Ago Today)

  1. Wonderful. I never saw a Traghetto during my short stay so I never managed to try this standing crossing in an open gondola! I wish I had been able to. Very atmospheric picture.

    1. I'm glad you like it, Kent. I didn't see much of traghetti the first two times I visited Venice, and didn't have much to do with them for the first 5 years we lived there. But once we moved to San Polo near the Rialto Market we'd use them pretty frequently to cross the Grand Canal, as with the resident card a single trip was an affordable 70 centesimi (instead of the €2 without it). Next time you go you can try one--though they're awfully short trips!

  2. Wonderfully atmospheric - the river Styx. Winter is the best time in Venice.

    1. Yes, Victoria, at night, and especially during the winter, it's hard not to think of the River Styx when you see the the traghetto crossing in the dark--and, even better, the fog. And you're right, it's hard to beat Venice in the winter (as long as you have a dry place to stay).
