Rain usually helps temper the crush a bit, Jon, which is why I'm never too dismayed by gray weather here--and ecstatic about dense fog. But even on rainy days the usual rule applies: morning and evening are the times to be out.
Not too early, Ella, this was taken probably just after 8:30 am--early enough that the daily wave of invaders hadn't yet hit Venice's Riva degli Schiavoni. Or at least, they hadn't yet lumbered to the Rialto Bridge (though some--and maybe even a surprising mass--had likely already reached Piazza San Marco).
Maybe we need rain to see Venice without masses. If that is so, I'll love Blue Mondays.
