Blue Beacon, This Evening

A full day of rain and, as I type this, it hasn't stopped (or even slowed) yet. In fact, the forecast shows rain for the next week.

"Marzo pazzo," they say here, meaning the weather of this month is crazily unpredictable, mercurial. But in fact there are long stretches when it's madly consistent, monomaniacal even, and rain is simply what it's all about.

  1. We have our own Marzo Pazzo in Moscow - couple days ago it was minus 19 Celsius in the morning, everything is covered in deep snow. Can't take my new camera outside - the temperature is beyond the safe range.

    1. Sasha, it sounds like Marzo in Mosca è proprio pazzo compared to Venice. Though a few days ago they were forecasting snow(!) in Venice tomorrow or the next day, it now looks like we'll actually only be getting more rain. I hope you'll get a chance to try out your new camera outdoors soon.

    2. Oh, there is plenty to shoot indoors. If you have a minute - please take a look at this (click for the image's full size) :

It's a photo of a part of Jacopo de' Barbari's 1500 Venice map shot in aperture priority mode. The result is interesting, it's almost 3D!

I'm going to Paris for a week this Saturday - with a day trip to Brugge planned. So there'll be plenty outdoors shooting as well.

      Life's good:)

    3. Wow, that is really stunning! "Almost" 3-D? I'd say it is. Did you take that? If so, did you have a special lens on it & how wide open was your aperture?

Paris sounds nice, as does Brugge--which I've only seen briefly as a teen. I recently read that if Venice had not engaged in the massive effort to redirect the sediment-carrying rivers around the lagoon into the Adriatic, the lagoon would have been filled in 500 yrs ago, as the waters that once surrounded Brugge were filled up.

    4. I shot it with prime lens, 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Nikkor.Aperture was 2.2. Then I was making more photos of that great map, letting auto focus catch the facades along the Grand Canal - and the areas before and behind were left blurred. It's an interesting effect.

By the way - have you heard about the Norwich's A History Of Venice one volume hardcover edition? It was printed in 2007 by London's Folio Society. The booksellers in Venice, the ones I asked about this book, didn't know this edition - they all carry a paperback, which is falling apart after the first reading.

And last week I've received my copy from UK. Good sturdy hardcover in a slipcase. I've made some photos:

As for the Paris it's a kind of obligation - I was there already twice but very briefly and now have to have a closer look. I'm not very much excited. My 2 weeks in Venice this November or December are much more enticing.

    5. The edition of the Norwich looks quite nice--the reproduction opposite the title page is impressive. I've heard of the Folio Society but haven't kept up with what they've been doing.

I'm also still impressed with that image of the map. It's a great effect. So you must have Nikon camera?

    6. Yes, it's Nikon D5100. The camera is a bit closer to the more upscale Nikon D7000 (uses the same sensor) than the beginners' level Nikon D3100. Got the kit with 18-55 VR and 55 - 200 VR lens, and the 35 mm 1/1.8 prime lens is a couple hundred dollars extra.

My previous camera is Pentax Optio 750Z and it was good for it's times (released in 2004), but the Nikon gives me a very...upgraded experiences.

  2. Uffa, it is mighty damp and drear out there. But, it's Venice.

  3. We seem to have similar "points of view"

But I must admit I'm jealouse, your's is a much better picture, and that lit neon and wet floor you capture makes it. Good job!

    1. That's a wonderful photo of yours! And I had no idea the sign had all that red in it! I only caught the neon on the wet floor because I was literally driven into that passageway for shelter--and under shelter was the only place I could shoot a pic (as my camera isn't waterproof). Your photo also makes it look like a place that most people (including me) wouldn't imagine was just a few yards off of Piazza San Marco.
