Titian's "Sapienza" in the Antechamber of the Biblioteca Marciana

Painted in 1560, Titian's Sapienza (or Wisdom) was situated on the ceiling of the antechamber some 30 years before it became the Statuario Pubblico discussed in my last post, when the room still served as a classroom for the study of rhetoric, philosophy and ancient Greek.

    1. The conservator's tape is still on the ceiling around Titian's canvas, which is probably how it was when you saw it--but it's just beyond the boundaries of this image. I believe the tape is used more to monitor whether cracks are getting worse than to actually hold things together. The canvas itself looks to be in such good shape that it's easy to imagine that it might have been cleaned at least in recent years, but I don't know if that's the case.
