  1. It's probably just as well that there aren't any brass monkeys in Venice! Brrr

    1. What do brass monkeys do, Yvonne? We didn't have any in California where I grew up, and I must have missed them elsewhere. Should I google this?

    2. I'm happy to contribute to your continuing education, Sig. Here's a link to one of the aforesaid monkeys, to be found in Stanthorpe, Queensland, of all places!

    3. Ah, now I get it! Thank you. I'm a big fan of Melville but I haven't read Omoo or maybe I would've gotten it before...

  2. Amazing photo - I wish I was there for the 'big freeze' - but perhaps I would be wishing for warmer weather after a few hours!

    1. If you weren't wishing for warmer weather after a few hours, Mary, you probably would be after the many days this cold has been hanging around here. It was fun at first, but now... Perhaps it's getting better, though, haven't ventured outside yet today. Let's hope. (Though there was some snow this morning.)

    1. I'm happy to tell you that today was not quite so cold, so by your arrival tomorrow perhaps we will be up to average temperatures. Let's hope so...

    1. Thank you much, Anna. I wonder if anyone actually ice skated on the Grand Canal back in the '20s when I've read it was frozen for a few days.
