I was only able to do it by setting the shutter speed very high (1/2000 of a second), setting the manual focus to about 30 feet distance, and the f-stop to allow for a decent depth-of-field. I also tried something on my camera I'd never used before: a "Sports Finder" mode which basically sets up a white-lined framing rectangle within the typical viewfinder view--so that one can see fast-moving objects before they actually enter the zone that will be captured on/by the sensor.
I once spent a frustrating half hour trying to "pin" images of swallows as they swiftly flirted by like that. It's not easy! Well done.
