It seems to be a constant battle against erosion by the water, and by tourist tootsies, but thank goodness they do keep on repairing Venice! The number of times that suddenly a tiny barrier appears, with a couple of workmen delving into a hole in the middle of the strada or whatever, and somehow daily life and traffic simply flows on around them ... You're right, Ella, the amount of labor it requires (and has always required) simply to keep this city "afloat", so to speak, is staggering.
