Spritzing into Spring


I really know nothing about such matters, but it always seems to me that it's not quite appropriate to drink Spritzs during the winter; they just don't seem to go well with the season. I don't even think they look right in the context of winter--their colors seem all wrong for the gray skies, fog, rain and snow.

But now that sunshine and warmer temperatures have finally come to Venice, Spritzs seem to be about the only thing one should be drinking. At least that's what the people above made me think.

    1. I believe your last point, Bert, is one that could be cited as evidence by those people who occupy themselves in arguing that the poor old earth was created by a benevolent diety--but I don't think they ever do.

  3. I like cities in gloom but this year for the first time I'm going to Flanders in summer, in July. Even the subdued charm of the off-season begins to wear off a bit with the years, the contrast is needed.

    Hope that trip will make me appreciate the one I plan for November/December (to Venice, of course) more.

    1. There's only so much extended or repeated gloom one can take, Sasha, and as you're expecting, Venice is likely to provide a healthy dose of it in Nov/Dec.

  4. Oh, how this picture and post makes me wish I were there for the spring season! I still feel the need to inaugurate Spritz season each spring, even here in Georgia. Thank goodness for the recent rise in Stateside popularity of Aperol-- when I first came back from Venice 15 years ago, it was impossible to find and I could only dream of the charming pink-orange of a perfectly concocted Spritz!

With a spritz in hand, sitting beneath or near the right kind of blossoming tree or bush, and perhaps with a little Venetian flag hanging nearby, I imagine one could almost imagine oneself in Venice, even as far away as Georgia. Here's hoping that your first Spritz of this season is a good one, and that some not-too-distant spring might find you enjoying one in Venice.

    1. You put it just right, I think, Anonymous. Though at the moment the local identity may temporarily be inclined to express itself in vin brule because of the weather, spritzes are never far off. Thank you for you kind comment.
