'Tis the Season: Acqua Alta

If I remember correctly, some of the worst acqua alta of last year occurred during December, so I know what's waiting for us when we return home from our two week visit to the States. But far away from Venice, one can find oneself missing even acqua alta. The above photo was taken after my son's pre-school's Christmas pageant, last December. As fun as the pageant was, I think he enjoyed splashing home just as much.

  1. Ciao Sig. Nonioso! I just found your blog and truly love it. I have been to Venice many times and my goal is to live there someday soon. But in the meantime, I happily will follow blogs like yours, so that I can live vicariously through your experiences! I was there last December, and yes, there were many mornings of Acqua Alta. And funny enough, I miss it too!

Ciao, Sig. Nonioso and grazie! Stop by my own love letter to Italy and Venice, Venice to Venezia (www.venicetovenezia.com).

  2. Now we know why this street is called Paludo S. Antonio.
A good photo of your son. The outswung arm shows the effort he is putting into it.
[I posted this earlier, but it disappeared!]

  3. I see why, now. I didn't notice the word verification. My comment just seemed to appear on your blog, so I exited.

  5. @Maya:

Thanks so much for your very kind comment. I've been kicking myself because I missed an exhibition linked to the Biennale about Venice, CA art scene and Venezia. I will console myself by checking out your website!

  6. @ Bert:

Do you just immediately recognize every calle in Venice or do you sometimes resort to a memory aid? Amazing. I don't think I remember the name of where that pic was taken, though I've been walking down it a lot in recent weeks.

  7. @ Annie,

Thanks for your wishes & your comment. We've had good luck w/ travel so far, though I think I'd kind of forgotten how much time one must spend in a car here getting from one place to another. Though I suspect I often spend just as much time on foot getting from one place to another in Venice as we might spend in the car on some errand in the States, but maybe it just seems shorter when you don't have to pay attention to driving.

  8. @ Sig. Nonloso! Mio marito will be very disappointed to hear he missed that exhibition as well. He attended the Biennale in September and didn't come across it. He would have loved it! I can't believe we didn't hear about it! Ay yi yi! ;)

  9. @ Maya,

There's so many things to see during the Biennale it's just impossible to get to them all... And I think the Venice to Venezia was one of the less-well-publicized shows: I just happened to see a couple of posters. But I still didn't make it there in all the months I had to do so! At least your husband had the excuse of a limited window of opportunity.
