Yes, contrary to what folks sometimes suggest, not every place is crowded all the time all year round--even in recent years. (A recent piece by the writer Colm Toibin suggested there would normally have been a crowd viewing the stations of the cross paintings by Domenico Tiepolo in the church of San Polo during a non-Covid November, but that's just silly. I like those paintings and stop by to see them fairly often and there's never a crowd even in summer.) But in the '90s the campo would have been empty, but the buildings and stores around it less so than today, alas.
Yes, I can recall it as quiet from just a few years ago - we normally stay in the winter months, when it's more peaceful, and less crowded. Thank you for this image that jogs the memory - again!
I remember seeing San Polo so empty in my winter visits in the 90s. Love it!

ReplyDeleteThe campo, and it environs, is an interesting area; I feel sorry those many many tourists who visit and never see any of it.
