The conservator's tape is still on the ceiling around Titian's canvas, which is probably how it was when you saw it--but it's just beyond the boundaries of this image. I believe the tape is used more to monitor whether cracks are getting worse than to actually hold things together. The canvas itself looks to be in such good shape that it's easy to imagine that it might have been cleaned at least in recent years, but I don't know if that's the case.
