When the Whole Wide World Is Fast Asleep: Venice in the First Hour of This Morning
On a black night, with the moon already down, every light in the lagoon, no matter what its practical or necessary function might be--and including even those of a passing vaporetto!--seems to exist solely for the sake of spectacle.
It is very much it's own Venice, as you say Rob--not just the late night or early morning Venice in general, but specifically that of the late night or early morning vaporetto. And you make an excellent point: it's not just how it all looks--the lights on the oily water--but the sounds! So easy to forget sounds in such a spectacular city but you're absolutely right about those recorded announcements which somehow manage to seem both impersonal yet homey on a late night vaporetto. Thanks for calling my attention to it all again.
Thank you for the link to your images, Annik, they're beautiful. And very interesting to see them done in b/w or in subdued tones, as it seems I find it impossible to think in anything but color. Also a great contrast to the way in which so many images of Venice--and everywhere else--seemed to be colorized beyond recognition.
There is indeed a nice sound to how the vaporetto's automated voice handles that destination, Andrew; now that you mention it, it immediately returns. I'm also partial to Santa Maria del Giglio, which out of desperation to divert Sandro on the long return home from his old preschool (he was inclined to get bored w/ the ride around this point), became, for us, Santa Maria del Wiggly.
Beautiful words for a beautiful pic!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jon!
DeleteThat's the Venice I miss!
ReplyDeleteAnd as the Vaporetto goes past you can hear the announcement "Prossima Fermata.......", Roll on December........

DeleteI love that. It will, for me, be always S. Maria del Wiggly now.
ReplyDeleteWell, Andrew, once that Wiggly version gets in your head it's hard to get out. I still expect to hear it on the official vaporetto announcement.
