I lived in Venice for 27 years, went to Sant'Elena few times a year for all the years we sailed, but I never noticed how breathtaking the sunsets can be from the island until a summer evening three years ago. I guess I was always back in Dorso Duro at that time of the day or I was clueless.
I suspect there are worse things one could do than make a vow to never miss a Venetian sunset, Laura, but it would be a hard vow to keep. But even then the problem would be that one could only watch them from a single location at a time. I've seen a sunset while standing on the Accademia Bridge that I couldn't imagine looking more beautiful from anyplace else, and yet, what must it have looked like from San Giorgio Maggiore? Or Sant' Elena? Or the north lagoon? Or Lido? I guess on most days when it come to sunsets it's usually catch as catch can, though I've often thought of being more diligent about trying to see them.

Now the city means the lagoon to me, and it's the lagoon rather than the architecture or art that makes it hard to imagine living anywhere else.
