    1. Thanks, EastTraveler. It's probably too late to wish you Merry Christmas, but as February is not quite over yet I hope I can still sneak in a Happy New Year to you.

  3. Beautiful and so timely, as for a number of years we used to come to Venice just before Christmas, then head up to Cortina to ski, then back for a few days in Venice and home to Canada. I never stopped being awed by the sight of the Dolomites from Venice, as they might as well have been the moon, given the extraordinary differences between the two regions. All the best of the season to you and your family and to my fellow Venice lovers here. I hope that we will all be able to return safely and in good health to visit La Serenissima very soon.

    1. Sending you very belated thanks, Bossert, and good wishes for this new year (which might not be quite brand new, but still seems new enough)! The trips you made to Venice and Cortina before Christmas really sound like the ideal combination, and I'm with you on the sight of Dolomites from the lagoon. At first, on most days, I made out only their vague outline and believed they were just low clouds, as how could there be mountains visible from the lagoon? It really is an extraordinary sight, and one that is not all that common. And of course the Dolomites themselves seen up close are stunning enough as it is.

One clear February afternoon last year just after a storm the day before (and just before lockdown began), I visited the island of San Francesco della Vigna and walked with one of the brothers out to the balustrade there looking out over Burano--but not only Burano. The brother slowly swept his outstretched arm and pointing finger more than 180 degrees along the horizon, starting at the northeast of us and continuing counter-clockwise to the southwest (from approximately the 2 to the 7 on a clock face), and said that that morning the sky had been so clear that all the mountains from Croatia in the northeast to the Euganean Hills stood out in sharp detail. The view was still striking at the hour we stood there, but he, who'd lived on the island a number of years (in two different periods), suggested the clarity that that particular morning had gone far beyond the usual.

Storms in the lagoon are always dramatic (though not enjoyable if you happen to be in a boat), and sometimes the views that follow are even moreso: eg, https://veneziablog.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-lagoon-set-off-to-best-effect.html

  4. We all to return to Venice, when it is safe. Sending our very best wishes to all who love Venice, all who are even fortunate enough to live there, as well as all of us who feel we have really missed our pre Christmas visits there.
    We sill be back, someday.
Best wishes for Christmas and New Year.

    1. A very belated (or early) Merry Christmas to you, Ella, and I hope your new year has gotten off to a good start (in spite of all the obvious issues affecting everyone). Venice is not going anywhere, so it will be here when you are able to visit again.

  5. Stunning, stunning photos. Missing Venezia very much, and sending wishes for your safety and health. Also, here is an interesting article about Amsterdam (and AirBnB) today. https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2020/12/crackdown-on-windows-alcohol-sales-and-inner-city-holiday-rental-ban-the-shape-of-central-amsterdam-in-2025/

    1. Very belated thanks, Mary, for both your wishes and the article. One can only hope Venetian authorities would be a little more diligent regarding AirBnB (among other things).
