It made me think of the girds of Minimalism, HKB, and with the human traces of one by Agnes Martin.... I guess it's sad in the way that people have for well over two centuries found Venice to be sad, this city filled with the ruins of past epochs and defunct industries and trade. This one just happens to be one of the more recent examples.
Makes it look kind of pretty (like art), but it's kind of sad when seen in person, isn't it?
