We were all a bit under the weather this year and except for a little boat ride around sunset--well before the fireworks began at 11:30 pm--we stayed close to home in Castello. It was windy and very rough on the water in a small boat (and all the boat traffic didn't help either). Did you manage to get a spot on the Punta della Dogana? You'd be practically underneath the fireworks then.
