A Tall--Rather Than a Big--Ship, This Evening

If all big ships passing through Venice were limited to this size and this style perhaps there would be less complaints about them.

    1. They don't even necessarily have to have the masts, Brigitte, just a limit to the size of the ships makes a huge difference. Though the masts are picturesque...

    1. It was quite a sight, HKB, and another good reminder never to step outside in Venice without a camera--though I suppose most people now simply have their smart phones.

  4. It's certainly eye-catching, Linda, and not simply because it blots out the entire horizon like far too many ships that pass through Venice.

  5. That reminds we my daily walks early in the morning on Riva degli Schiavoni up to the Giardini when I was in Venice on July two years ago. Nearly every day between 6 and 8, a giant cruise ship (more or less giant, but very often awfully giant) entered the laguna and Canale di San Marco up to the Canale della Giudecca and the Stazione Marittima. One day, in the golden morning light, appeared such a five-masted cruise ship, may be that one of the photo. It was really a magical moment. Big masted-ships are always magic anywhere, but in Venice it is really moving. You are right, Sig Nonloso, one needs to bring every time any kind of camera in Venice. Early even very early walks in Venice are always wonderful moments, in any season. (by Auvraisien)

    1. In the early mornings and evenings during the summer, Auraisien, there can be something like a little parade of massive cruise ships the whole length of the Riva and past San Marco: to see at least 3 or 4 passing almost one after another isn't unusual--though always kind of surprising anyway (and not really in a good way). But, as you say, the sight of tall ship is quite striking.
