("Voga all Valesana" is a form of Venetian rowing in which one person uses two oars, as above and below, usually shorter and lighter than the single oar one would use when rowing "alla Veneta"--ie, as gondoliers do, most famously.)

What a cool dude! How excellent you just happened to be at the right place to see this fellow.
ReplyDeletePerhaps this was the only day in which he dressed so well to go out for a row, Yvonne--perhaps he rowed to work? to an appointment?--so I did feel lucky to catch sight of him. One never knows what one might see...

DeleteOn the other hand, it may simply be that his engine (visible on the back of his sanpierota) broke down and he was just rowing himself home from work...
DeleteI think he is like my grandfather was, always dressed well in any occasion, nothing fancy but nice.
ReplyDeleteHe was probably have a great time, I think rowing is very meditative.
I kind of suspect he was like your grandfather (and my great-uncle), Laura, though even here it is now unusual to see that kind of clothing while rowing. And, I agree that rowing is very meditative, unless you're trying to cross the Bacino di San Marco.
