I have so many photos from this year's Festa del Redentore that I'm going to divide them into two different posts: today will be devoted to fireworks, the day after tomorrow (Tuesday, 17 July) will be devoted to revelers.
Today's post might also be called "16 Ways of Looking at Santa Maria della Salute."
A very different perspective on last year's Redentore fireworks, which I took from aboard a friend's boat near the basin of San Marco, may be seen here:

I am ALMOST tempted to visit Venice in July, for this, and the many other Feste. Was Sandro awake for all of this wonder, light and noise??
ReplyDeleteAre Venetian dogs freaked out by the sounds of fireworks?
It's such a trade-off to visit in June & July for the feste: so nice in some ways, so awful in others... Hard to figure.
DeleteSandro, alas, was asleep by 8 pm, long before the fireworks began at 11:30. He & I had gone out together the night before & stayed out later than planned in Santo Stefano due to gelato & our purchase of one of those lighted slingshot whirlygig toys you see dozens of Indian men selling in ever major campo. It seemed best to just let him catch up on sleep, as that's what he most wanted to do. There's always next year.
I would imagine Venetian dogs aren't too happy about those fireworks, but I didn't see any or hear of any to confirm this. Much worse are the obnoxious "party boats" that fill the lagoon along the Riva with their awful dance music: they'd set people to howling.
Those photos are spectacular! Now we need a photo of Sandro playing with his new toy.
ReplyDeleteLike Yvonne, I am almost tempted to visit Venice in the Summer, but...I think I would be miserable.
It seems like visiting Venice in June or July is one of those things that--before you do it--you think: I MUST do this just once in my life.
DeleteAnd after you do it, you think: Never again!
I'm glad you like the pics!
OOOoooohhh, So-o-o jealous! Great Photos!
ReplyDeleteI went to Valencia for Las Fallas a few years ago. They have a week when fireworks are going off from morning till midnight. During the day, they are mostly 'bangers'. I noticed dogs and cats didn't seem to take any notice of the bangs. You couldn't really say that they were used to it, as they only have this once a year.
Perhaps like the proverbial elephants, dogs & cats in Valencia have great memories?
DeleteThe biggest challenge about the pics was to figure out a place to go that would be very different from last year & that wouldn't put me in the position of repeating the familiar (if not famous) perspectives on the fireworks that professional photographers of great talent had already shot from.
Of course you probably knew with a glance at the first pic, Bert, exactly where I was positioned.
I'm with Susie and Yvonne on being tempted to visit in July for the fireworks - but on balance as I hate both heat and crowds and the two together seem like the very definition of awfulness - I'll stick with winter visits I think!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos though. Thank you so much.
I'm with you, Mary, I think heat and crowds are most certainly the definition of awfulness--and I have recent (and repeated) evidence to back that up.
DeleteThanks so much for your kind words about the pics.
IT'S REALLY WONDERFUL BLOG ALSO " I LIKE IT "
DeleteTHANKS FOR SHARING A GOOD INFO
