I just don't know why an experience that should be and could be enjoyable, should become a chore or a trial--for tourists or guides. Steven Varni, aka Sig. If we did have anyone who would occasionally enforce laws, certainly these horrible clackers would be prohibited as well.

The operative word of course, is "if".
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-151589473709505648.post-31437312573123094432013-10-07T14:35:17.158-04:002013-10-07T14:35:17.158-04:00Impersonating a policeman is actually a very inter...Impersonating a policeman is actually a very interesting idea, Sasha, but I think I'd give myself away as only a fake policeman if I actually enforced certain rules here. The people I see in Venice who are stuck with consistently enforcing rules are the generally young people in the orange vests who must tell tourists they can not sit down on the edge of the piazzette or piazza. It is a thankless and truly Sisyphean task, as no sooner do these enforcers progress 10 yards along the steps lining the Piazza before new tourists sit down in the spots they've just cleared.
Steven Varni, aka Sig. But as there was headline in the paper today that there's talk of opening a hotel on San Michele perhaps you won't even be able to avoid the clackers outside the winery there! I haven't had a chance to read about it yet, but I hope it's not true. Steven Varni, aka Sig. Just a couple days ago I was leaving...Intolerable.

Just a couple days ago I was leaving a commuter train and ascending the stairs to the bridge when I heard a woman yelling through a loudspeaker - she was announcing some "mega-sale of top quality fur coats just a couple hundred meters from here". Next day I was waiting for a train at a platform and had to listen to the same pitch again and again.

Obviously, she and the guides with the clapping tool are crossing the line. We don't have to be subjected to the noise they make so persistently and so disturbingly, to hear the message that is intended only for the people who are part of a tiny group of tourists - or these interested in buying a fur coat offered with such clamour - in case of that loudspeaker woman.

In Russia I can commit a petty crime of impersonating a policeman (I look like one) and get the lady off the bridge but I don't think that can be an option for you here in Venice:)
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-151589473709505648.post-2331044794318436302013-10-03T19:05:45.280-04:002013-10-03T19:05:45.280-04:00How demeaning for everyone concerned.
