I've been out of Venice for almost this entire month, hence the few blog posts (the least for any month since I started blogging 8 years ago). Over the next three days I'll put up a series of shots taken in the morning last month: in that marvelous time just before the crowds descend upon the city--the time when any visitor to Venice should make a point of being out and about the city.

I must admit to having been rather puzzled by the significance of this icon warning sign posted on the old terazzo floor of a public building, but my son, Sandro, was able to explain it to me to straightaway.

"Obviously," he said, "it's a warning about the possibility of tripping over the hat of a gondoliere left lying around here on the floor."
